Protect the feet from frost and dirt. Fastening boots and socks for small dogs. Master Class.
Posted by Nina Lazareva (Marusa).
Now WINTER. And for all in winter, the problem of protecting the paws of dogs from the cold is very urgent.
I live in SIBERIA and in winter happens oh-oh! From November to March there are frosts of 20-30 degrees. And sometimes up to 40 frost!
But I walk with my Manyula daily 3 times a day. And we walk, for about 20 minutes. And on weekends we take walks and for 2-3 hours.
First of all, I solved the problem of foot warming. And at the same time, so that everything is well kept, not lost and does not interfere freely dog move. I tried a lot of things until I came to my version. Beautiful shoes that are attached directly to the legs, I really like. But my dog they do not fit. We have pencil legs. Therefore, my method of fastening boots is mainly for dogs with even, thin pencil legs. These are yorkies, toyki, chinese crested hens, etc.
I tried in one way or another: and the combo sewed with one-piece closed legs, and fixed the boots on rubber bands in the likeness of children’s mittens, which are held on elastic bands, stretched through the sleeves.
I stopped at the version in the likeness of the female belt for holding stockings. The belt is sewn double. I sew such a belt from cotton, it is in the form of a vest, which fits the dog quite tightly, and also he additionally warms the dog in the winter. This belt keeps well on the doggie and socks and boots are fastened to the buttons. In the dirt I fasten lightweight waterproof boots. And in the winter I put on socks under the bottom and on top there are still knitted boots, it turns out that there are double mittens on the legs. The dog is quite warm and comfortable. For the York breed, probably, it would be necessary for the inside of the belt to be made of silk fabric.
Boots can be sewed and knit different for any weather in order to protect the feet from cold and dirt.
I agree that all this is full of holes and wipes and lasts for 2-3 weeks (which is why you should not make a deaf combination with paws). I make a lot of socks, for which I use the upper parts of old socks, men’s socks with elastic bands on top are especially good. I make boots from a raincoat fabric and from old umbrellas. When worn, I repair only the bottoms, while right above we sew new circles-bottoms.
For winter I prefer knitted stockings-boots, which I knit from top to bottom. High boots do not need, somewhere 10-12cm. When I wear knitted boots, I tie up the lower part or darn it with a special strong thread for knitting socks.
I have been warming my dog for the fifth winter already. There are no problems!
Belt for mounting boots on a small dog.
Sewn in the form of a small vest, tight-fitting dog, to which socks and boots are fastened on the shoulder straps. Wears a belt under the bottom kombeza or other your walking clothes.
I give the pattern of the belt according to the standards of my Manka:
on the back. 28 cm
feet height. 17 cm
breast volume 45 cm
It is necessary that the belt fits the body of the dog quite tightly and not twisted. Therefore, we make a wide gate-loop around the neck and front paws. On the back, the belt comes to the beginning of the hind legs, and on the stomach you can make it shorter, up to the waist. The belt is fastened with a Velcro top.
See the photo, which shows this belt on the dog.
1. View of the belt on the dog and under the suit:
2. Cover the belt.
I give the pattern with dimensions and in the photo I show the junction points of the bottom and sidewalls.
There will be two sides, a bottom and a gate (½ part is shown at the gate). We make all the parts double, for which we stitch on the wrong side around the edges, leaving it not stitched at the neck, and turn it over on the face:
3. We lock the gate. We try on the belt on the dog to determine the exact line of sewing the bottom to the sides, while the “wings” should sag and we sew the line of sewing:
4. Having determined the sewing line, we sew the bottom to the sides.
Note that the lower part of the sidewalls (“wings”) hang loosely on the sides, forming wings. Sew on the gate, connecting the bottom and sides. See photos, what should happen in the end:
5. Side view of the belt:
6. Bottom view of the belt in the expanded and buttoned form:
7. Prepared socks and boots, which we will fasten to the belt:
8. Socks will be fastened from the inside of the belt. Boots are fastened on the outside of the belt. Determine the place of the buttons for fastening the socks and boots:
We fasten all the socks and boots to the belt. We fasten new ones only once, then it just just hangs on a belt and quite quickly and easily puts on. Buttons are sewn on the belt to the straps hanging from the sides, I call them further wings, they are sewn from two sides, 2 pcs. on the outer side of the wings for fastening the boots and 1 piece from the inside for fastening the socks. To wear socks and boots is necessary. All this should spring up well, stretch and give the foot to bend so that the dog can walk, run and crouch freely.
10. Dressing a belt on a dog with fastened socks and boots. We first put on a sock and then boots:
The belt with the fastened socks and boots is dressed on a doggie. The belt is fastened on top through the velcro.
11. Now NOSOCKS: they are doing a lot of things, better than hb, warm. I use tops from old socks. Especially men’s socks are good for this. FOR ALL the socks WE sew a WING, 1 piece. These socks will be fastened to the waist on the wings from the inside.
12. BOOTS: we also do all sorts of things, from material to stronger. In the cold. warm on the dirt. from raincoats, old umbrellas. To your taste and choice, and under each suit. For the winter, I make knitted boots. The upper part of the boots must necessarily be slightly expanded and you can even make the cut. It will be more comfortable to wear. The bottom is made round or oval on the sole of the foot and sewn around the circumference. Strongly high socks and boots should not be done, the foot should bend freely. From the top of the boots, we make 2 SHEELS, with which we fasten them to the outer part of the belt wings.
Immediately I warn you that boots wear out quickly, especially the bottoms. I repair them, for which I simply take and sew new bottoms by hand directly over the top. And if knitted, then tie the bottom. Also for strength I add a thread for knitting heels in socks.
In this MC, I pay more attention to how to fasten socks and boots, so that they do not subside.
Here is my easiest sewing shoes:
We dress a belt, a top kombez or other your walking clothes. Boots now do not fly off and you can go for a walk.
13. Dressing and taking off.
Socks and boots always remain fastened to the belt. This is seen in the photo. Now I have three such belts with strapped socks and boots. Two on weekdays – I wear them in turn. I always dry well after a walk. And one holiday, under light, is sewn from a warm white flannel with knitted white boots.
Clasp. The buckle on the belt must always be done through and along the back. I make it with velcro, so that the velcro doesn’t catch the dog’s hair, make a larger entry under the zipper. This clasp greatly facilitates the process of dressing and undressing. All my overalls also have a fastener on the back.
Dressing. At first the belt itself is worn and it is fastened with a velcro on the back. To prevent the velcro from clinging to the wool, make a run over more and do not sew the velcro along the very edge. Wear consecutively on each foot, first socks and then boots. Manka herself gives me paws and helps them to wear! Manka likes to climb in the snow and sometimes manages to pull legs out of socks, therefore, for reliability, I also wear colored rubber rings on top (as for children’s braids). Further on your doggie with the dressed and fastened boots you put on your outerwear. This is done quite quickly and without problems, since all the legs with claws are closed with boots.
Strip. Here it is very important that the fastener on the belt and on the suit is in one place. This is especially convenient when undressing.
First, unzip the suit and at the same time completely unfasten the belt. We take out the hind legs from the socks first and then just over the head I just tighten both the suit and the belt. The dog is FREE. And I take the belt out of the suit, take out all the socks from the boots and dry everything.
If your overalls have a fastener on the tummy, then on the belt I would advise you to do the fastener there too.
Now in our wardrobe there appeared combos with fasteners on the stomach and there are no special problems when undressing. I unzip the suit, take out the hind legs from the suit, while they are still shod. I unbutton the belt completely and also all over my head. Manka also helps me get rid of clothes.
