Alaska's Devastating Flood: Homes Swept Away by Typhoon's Fury
In a tragic turn of events, the remnants of Typhoon Halong unleashed hurricane-force winds and catastrophic flooding on the coastal communities of western Alaska. The storm's impact was so severe that entire houses were pushed off their foundations, leaving residents in a state of panic and uncertainty.
The tiny villages of Kipnuk and Kwigillingok bore the brunt of the storm's wrath. Jeremy Zidek, a spokesperson for the state's Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, reported that up to 20 people were unaccounted for, sparking urgent rescue efforts. "We received reports of homes floating away, potentially with people inside," Zidek revealed to the Associated Press, highlighting the dire situation.
Alaska State Troopers confirmed the extent of the damage, stating that both Kipnuk and Kwigillingok experienced "strong winds and heavy flooding overnight, resulting in significant destruction, including at least eight homes being dislodged from their foundations."
A coordinated response involving more than a dozen agencies, including the Alaska National Guard, was swiftly initiated. The Alaska Organized Militia, comprising the Alaska National Guard, Alaska State Defense Force, and Alaska Naval Militia, was activated to assist with storm response operations across the affected western Alaska communities.
Governor Mike Dunleavy assured the public, "Every effort is being made to provide aid to those affected by this storm. Help is indeed on the way." Dunleavy further expanded the state's disaster declaration to encompass areas impacted by the storm, initially issuing it on Thursday following another powerful storm in western Alaska.
The aftermath of the storm revealed inundated roads and boardwalks, with power lines damaged in Bethel, Napaskiak, Napakiak, and other Yukon-Kuskokwim communities. Crews worked tirelessly to clear the debris-littered airport runway in Bethel, a challenging task given the area's isolated nature, where communities rely on boardwalks, boats, and snowmobiles for transportation, as Zidek explained.
